Join us on a photographic journey through Norway’s Arctic Circle, where snow-capped peaks, frozen fjords, and the elusive Northern Lights await. From the quiet charm of Sommarøy to the wild beauty of Senja — known as “Norway in miniature” — each day unfolds with new opportunities to capture the landscape’s breathtaking light, texture, and movement.

Guided by Leica Akademie tutor Carlos Monforte, the focus is on refining how you see — developing the patience, curiosity, and artistry that define true visual storytelling. Whether it’s a fleeting glow in the sky or the gentle rhythm of Arctic life, every frame becomes a reminder to slow down, observe, and allow nature to reveal its story through light and form.

Itinerary

Day 1 (24 February) – Sommarøy

Arrival in Tromsø in the afternoon, followed by a drive to Sommarøy Island and hotel check-in.

If conditions allow, the first evening offers an introduction to photographing the Northern Lights around the Sommarøy area.

Stay then night in Sommarøy

Day 2 (25 February) – Sommarøy

A full day in Sommarøy dedicated to photography and local exploration. The focus is on working with coastal light, weather, and composition.

Evening aurora session, depending on conditions.

Overnight in Sommarøy.

Day 3 (26 February) – Sommarøy / North Senja

After breakfast, travel to Senja, with photographic stops along the route.

Upon arrival, locations are scouted for night photography. The rest of the day is spent working with the landscape and adapting to weather conditions.

Overnight in North Senja.

Days 4 (27 February) – North Senja

Senja is often referred to as “Norway in miniature,” as one of the largest islands in the region, offering a remarkable diversity of landscapes that reflect the essence of the country. A full day is dedicated to exploring and photographing its varied landscapes, including coastal forms and potential wildlife encounters such as reindeer.

The evening is reserved for Northern Lights photography, depending on conditions. We remain flexible, moving according to weather conditions to make the most of the surroundings.

Overnight in North Senja.

Day 5 (28 February) – South Senja

Travel to southern Senja after breakfast, with a scenic route offering multiple photographic opportunities.

Arrival is followed by scouting and preparation for night photography. The pace remains flexible according to weather and light.

Overnight in South Senja.

Days 6 & 7 (1–2 March) – South Senja

These days are dedicated to photographing the Northern Lights, with daytime used for scouting, landscape and wildlife photography, particularly reindeer.

Senja’s varied terrain — mountains, fjords, and coastal edges — offers continuous opportunities to refine composition and approach.

All movements remain weather-dependent to maximise conditions.

Overnight in South Senja.

Day 8 (3 March) – Senja to Tromsø

Return journey to Tromsø after breakfast, with photographic stops along this remarkable Nordic landscape .

Overnight in Tromsø.

Day 9 (4 March) – Tromsø / Singapore

After breakfast, transfer to Tromsø Airport for departure, or onward travel.

What's Included:

  • Accommodation in private rooms with the best view, breakfast included
  • Ground transportation in a minibus throughout the journey with a local driver
  • Pick-up in and drop-off in Trømso Airport.
  • Online pre-workshop session with Leica Akademie tutor Carlos Monforte
  • On-location guidance, presentations, and editing sessions led by Leica Akademie tutor Carlos Monforte

Costs Not Included:

  • Flights (international or domestic)
  • Visa (if required)
  • Travel and medical insurance (mandatory, including cancellation or trip disruption)

Difficulty:

Easy. The itinerary involves extended time outdoors but no demanding hikes.

Participants should be comfortable using their own camera. All camera systems are welcome.

Carlos Monforte, is a Barcelona-born, Singapore-based travel and landscape photographer known for capturing dramatic interactions between weather, light, and the urban skyline. His cinematic cityscapes and powerful storm imagery, including lightning over tropical skylines, have earned international recognition. Carlos combines deep technical expertise with artistic vision, often blending hundreds of exposures into high-resolution panoramas that reveal moments invisible to the naked eye. A passionate educator, he teaches photographers how to move beyond snapshots and capture the emotion and atmosphere of a place.
