Travel with Leica: Cinematic Portraiture with light & shadows in Bangkok

$2,400.00
#P65-26

Bangkok is a city of contrasts, from harsh midday light to neon-lit streets and deep shadows after dark. This workshop explores how to use these changing conditions to create stronger environmental portraits with a clear mood and visual direction.

Learn to balance ambient and artificial light, work confidently across different lighting conditions, and create cinematic portraits inspired by the distinctive, high-contrast aesthetic of Wong Kar-wai.

Core Focus Areas

Overpowering the Sun (Daytime Flash): Learn to tame harsh, midday sunlight. We will cover high-speed sync (HSS) and fill flash techniques to balance intense backlighting, turning unworkable daytime shadows into striking, high-impact editorial portraits.

Mastering Low-Light Environmental Portraiture: Learn to see and utilize the city's natural night canvas. We will explore how to expose for the highlights, embrace the deep blacks, and use streetlights, storefronts, and passing traffic as dramatic backdrops for your subjects.

Intentional Flash Photography: Flash is not just a tool for correction; it is a stylistic choice. You will learn to use direct and off-camera flash to isolate subjects, create stark contrast, and inject a raw, cinematic energy into your documentary work.

Freezing the Moment: Bangkok is chaotic, day and night. We will cover the exact techniques required to punch through the environment with your flash, freezing your subject in razor-sharp detail while leaving the ambient background rich and atmospheric.

Dragging the Shutter (Slow Shutter Mastery): Learn to manipulate time. By combining a slow shutter speed with a rear-curtain flash sync, you will capture the kinetic energy of the city—light trails, passing tuk-tuks, and motion blur—while keeping your central subject perfectly anchored in the frame.

Date & Time:
26th - 29th Nov

Agenda:

November 26th: Arrival & Immersion

Briefing & Welcome Dinner: We kick off the workshop in the heart of Bangkok. This evening is about setting our visual intentions, discussing the cinematic aesthetic we aim to achieve, and getting to know your fellow visual storytellers over local cuisine.

November 27th: Foundations of Light & Shadow

9AM - 12PM
Street Photography: We hit the streets to observe and capture the morning energy of the city, focusing on how ambient light shapes the chaotic urban landscape.

3PM to 5PM
Equipment Familiarization & Framing: A focused technical briefing. We will lock in our camera configurations, master flash settings, and discuss the philosophy of framing for cinematic tension.

7PM to 9PM
Low-Light Environmental Portraiture: As the neon lights turn on, we begin our first directed shoot. Working with professional models, you will practice balancing ambient glow with artificial light. Note: This session features an intimate 2:1 photographer-to-model ratio to ensure you have ample, focused shooting time.

November 28th: Kinetic Energy & Time

9AM to 11AM
Review & Editing: We review the raw files from the previous night. This session focuses on selection, critique, and how to post-process for that moody, high-contrast editorial look.

3PM to 5PM
Afternoon Portraiture: Ambient & Daylight Flash: We head out on location with our models to tackle the challenging afternoon conditions. This session emphasizes reading existing natural light, working with shadows, and introducing daylight flash to balance exposures and carve out striking portraits against the urban backdrop before dusk.

7PM to 10PM
Street Portraiture: Flash & Slow Shutter: The most technically demanding night of the workshop. We hit the busy streets with our models to master dragging the shutter and rear-curtain sync, capturing the kinetic motion of passing traffic while freezing our subjects perfectly in the frame. This session features an intimate 2:1 photographer-to-model ratio to ensure you have ample, focused shooting time.

November 29th: Mastering Harsh Light

10AM - 1PM
Daytime Portraiture & Fill Flash: We step out into the intense Bangkok sun to learn how to overpower midday light. Working with our models, you will use fill flash to balance harsh highlights and deep shadows, proving that dramatic, cinematic portraiture isn't restricted to the night. This session features an intimate 2:1 photographer-to-model ratio to ensure you have ample, focused shooting time.
