Shooting portraits is one of the most challenging but rewarding subjects in photography, and in this workshop, you will discover the creative process behind setting up and executing portrait photos. 

The focus of this workshop will be on exploring the creative process, with each step covered; from the development of a visual concept, to preparing and organising the shoot, to the final execution of it. 

This class is strictly limited to only 6 participants to ensure a quality experience. 

Topics covered include: 

BASICS OF PHOTOGRAPHY

  • What do you want to shoot?
  • Which camera / lens to start with / buy
  • Basics of using a rangefinder
  • Finding the “sweet spot” (Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO settings)
  • Light: available light vs. fill light
  • Composition
  • Balancing elements
  • Leading lines
  • Viewpoint / Shooting angles (people standing and sitting, animals, food, environment, things)
  • Depth
  • Capturing motion

BASIC PHOTO EDITING

  • Brightness, contrast
  • S curve
  • Healing
  • Texture
  • Leveling, cropping

PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY

  • Equipment set up
  • Distance + angles to subject
  • Focus points
  • Head room + surrounding space / the environment
  • Interacting with the subject
  • Expressions + moods
  • Photo selection
  • Portrait photo editing
  • Save formats (size + crop ratio)

Who should attend:
This workshop is open to anyone who is interested in portrait photography for personal or commercial use, especially University students studying photography or wanting to pursue a career in portrait or commercial photography.

Adele Chan (@adele__chan) Adele Chan is an Editor, Author and Photographer based in Singapore, with more than 20 years of experience in the media industry. She is currently the Editor-In-Chief of NYLON SINGAPORE, and has also written, photographed and published three books, Editing Beauty I, II and III. As a respected member of the Leica Camera Asia Pacific family, Adele is recognised for her proficiency with the Leica M-system, and shoots predominantly on the Leica M11, using a range of M lenses including her favourite APO-Summicron-M 50 f/2 ASPH lens. Among her accomplished works, Adele had a solo exhibition titled, “Face Value” that was shown at Leica Galerie Singapore featuring “influencers” and “girls of Instagram”, throwing the spotlight on the changing face of media and how society places values on them. In August 2022, she exhibited a series of lifestyle portraits called, “We The People”, depicting Singaporeans as a diverse society where every citizen is essential in their own way. Adele has also photographed a myriad of celebrities and covers for NYLON, as well as beauty and fashion campaigns for an extensive list of renowned brands including Shiseido, Shu Uemura, L’Oréal, Hermès, Chanel and Dior. She believes strongly in the empowerment of “real photography”, relying on proper composition, camera settings and lighting, and leaving little to the post-editing process.
