Leica Guild, Nicholas Damien Goh (@nicholasdamiengoh), takes us through his everyday ordinary at the gym for his weekly Jiu-Jitsu practices while capturing the exciting moments at the gym with his Leica SL2.

The calm before the storm. As each person steps foot onto the mats, it is a common ritual to greet one another with a handshake before beginning their preparation for another strenuous training – taping up their fingers to reinforce their grips, stretching to increase their mobility, and drilling to get their bodies warmed up.

From the early days of humanity, being able to fight and defend oneself – as individuals, a tribe, or a nation – has been a crucial life skill in ensuring survivability. In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, it is a game of human chess, where one uses leverage and pressure to force their opponent to surrender. Whether you are big or small, tall or short, fast or slow, at the end of the day, technique conquers all. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belts from different affiliations come together to train and share techniques, sometimes bringing along their students to gain more exposure by testing their skills during sparring sessions against people from other gyms.
