PUSHING THE LIMITS OF PHOTOGRAPHY
Leica SL Certified Professional, Geoff Ang (@geoffang), a distinguished international fashion and commercial photographer for over 30 years, shares his experience with the new Leica SL3
I am a commercial photographer, specialising in conceptual and fashion. Currently based in Bali, I am proud to be born and raised in Singapore, sharing my work internationally.
When Leica handed me the new Leica SL3 with its new specifications months ago, I asked myself, "How can I challenge the camera, with its 60-megapixel sensor and phase detection autofocus?" I decided to push all limits.
"Let's go with an all-black theme on a black sand beach, shooting directly into the setting sun to see how the camera performs."
Here are the results of the shoot that showcase the capabilities of the new Leica SL3 and its imaging features:
"This image with the satin fabric was really pushing limits. With most cameras, I would expect to encounter moiré, but with the Leica SL3 and the lenses I used, there was none, which truly blew my mind."
And having the “holy-trinity” Leica lenses is a huge advantage for me. This entire series was shot with the Leica SL3 and these lenses:
- Super-Vario-Elmarit-SL 14-24mm f/2.8 ASPH.
- Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm f/2.8-4 ASPH.
- APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90-280mm f/2.8-4
The 24-90mm and 90-280mm range gives me that little bit more, that extra edge, which is
amazing when I am framing and composing.
Evidently, the Leica SL3 performed beyond my expectations, the camera paired with the
amazing APO zoom lens delivered a file filled with a creamy tonal range
and depth that almost feels “medium format”.
As a commercial photographer, 60-megapixel sensor has always been my bare minimum requirement as most of my work requires large blowups for billboards. It's always a plus to have a camera that performs at the highest level of hardware capability, so that you as the photographer can just do what you do best… dream up crazy ideas and shoot it without any doubts or hesitation.
"Cameras are never important… it’s the photographer that makes the image, but.. having a really good camera and lens setup is an added bonus that just makes you that little bit better."
