Seeing a City in Nature with the Leica Q
Dr Andie Ang (@andieang) shares her deep connection to nature and the stories waiting to be captured

For me, the forest has never been just a place of research. It is a place of responsibility, curiosity, and deep connection. As the Head of Species Grants and Impact at Mandai Nature, I work to support conservation projects across Singapore and the region. Today, my work extends beyond the field as I contribute to global efforts that protect wildlife and inspire people to care for the natural world around them.
This International Women’s Day, I am reminded of the many women whose work quietly shapes the future of conservation, science, and our relationship with nature.
When I first had the opportunity to spend time with the Leica Q, it felt like another way for me to share the message that guides my work. Much of conservation begins with observation. You learn to notice small details, subtle movements, and quiet moments in nature. The Leica Q felt intuitive in that sense. It allowed me to capture what I was already noticing without interrupting the experience.

Singapore is often seen as a highly urbanised city, but what continues to inspire me is how much biodiversity still exists here. Despite its size, Singapore is home to an incredible range of ecosystems, from tropical rainforests to coastal mangroves and coral reefs. We share our space with plants, animals, fungi, and countless other forms of life.
Sometimes it is a quiet forest path.
Sometimes it is the way sunlight touches the leaves in the early morning.
Sometimes it is simply the presence of wildlife in places where people might not expect to find it.

Singapore’s wildlife is part of our shared home, and the idea of human-wildlife coexistence is something I strongly believe in. Protecting nature is not only the responsibility of scientists or conservationists. It is something we all play a role in. If photography can help someone pause, notice a species they have never seen before, or feel a deeper connection to nature, then it has already done something meaningful. And sometimes, all it takes is a moment and a camera to begin seeing the world a little differently.
"Through my pespective, I wanted to tell the story of a home for all species in our City in Nature." - Dr Andie Ang
