Leica Masterclass: The Story of Ovidiu Selaru

Ovidiu is a 41-year-old confessed dreamer and award-winning visual storyteller. Born and raised in a family of artists in northern Romania, his love for landscape and passion for creating things with his own hands were encouraged and nurtured by his parents and inspired by his native environment. Ovidiu has been living and working in London for the past 16 years.

Growing up, he was captivated by watching his father’s creative process. From his drawings to painting his amazing works on canvas, he inspired Ovidiu to dream of someday becoming an artist, just like him. Today, he pays homage to his father’s talent and artistic spirit through his own work.

Ovidiu started unlocking his creative flow in photography around fourteen years ago when he began collecting emotions through his lens. With a background in machinery and a keen sense for exact sciences and the geometry of the world around us, he captured specific emotions by applying angles, colour and light. The street photography segment is the niche that he feels best identifies with him, with a bit of an 'eternal snapshot' twist. He feels he has a different experience than the classic stream. Ovidiu enjoys capturing the quintessence of someone's inner beauty and nostalgia. He constantly aims to metaphorically transpose his models’ souls into black-and-white memories that last for eternity. His photographs capture a unique artistic quality, clearly defining his creative patterns.

People say an image is worth a thousand words. Ovidiu believes that words limit the inherent beauty captured through photography. He avoids limiting his interests to strictly portrait or landscape niches. Instead, he actively seeks out new perspectives, continually exploring the intricacies of human behaviour and the rich narratives that unfold in everyday life. His fascination extends to the interplay of angles and the architectural geometry of the space around him. He relies solely on instinct; he does not rationalise a movement or a motion, and rarely sets expectations; letting nature takes its course, observes and captures these decisive moments in time. The sixth sense cannot be explained easily, talent cannot be x-rayed, and heartfelt art cannot be disliked. He is constantly exploring and learning new techniques, pushing boundaries within himself as well as growing and developing his skills. He believes that by following one’s heart and trusting one’s instincts, while following the light, one will inevitably find success on the journey – from a simple passion to a complex form of communication.

Ovidiu has been awarded first place in the British Photography Awards, and his images frequently appear and are commented on in Vogue, EYE-Photo magazine, Soul of Street magazine as well as Photoshop magazine, among others. His camera is his ever-present companion on the streets of London. He never misses an opportunity to capture the unique flavour of a rain-soaked street landscape or the unspoken charm of a stunning sunset.
