LEICA GALERIE

Leica Camera shares a passion for and a love of creative photography of the highest standards with many people around the world – that’s why making such works and their creators accessible to people with this passion has always been important to Leica. For decades now, and for this precise reason, Leica has offered both prominent Leica photographers and emerging new talents an opportunity to present their work to a wider audience. The Leica galleries were conceived as the ideal forum for this purpose.

The tradition of the Leica Galleries goes back to the 1970s. The first Leica Gallery was founded in Wetzlar in 1976 and currently resides in the headquarters of Leica Camera AG. Further galleries were to follow, and today, Leica Galleries are found in many parts of the world, including Singapore.

Leica Galerie Singapore

Located at the iconic Raffles Hotel, the Leica Galerie is the start of a beautiful photographic journey for many. The goal is to share the joy and love for photography through Leica exhibitions in Singapore, to audiences who have yet to experience the emotions of such work firsthand. The Leica Galerie will showcase over 6 photography exhibitions each year from local and international talents. The first exhibition was launched with 23 original black and white prints from the Leica Collection and included works from legendary photographers such as Thomas Hoepker, Henri Cartier-Bresson, René Burri, Sebastiao Salgado, Constantine Manos, Klavdij Sluban and Jane Evelyn Atwood.

The Master of Elegance & Allure

28 Apr 2024 - 13 May 2024 | George Hoyningen-Huene

The exhibition, titled “The Master of Elegance & Allure,” is organised in collaboration with the George Hoyningen-Huene Estate Archives, established in 2020 to preserve the renowned photographer’s legacy, share his work with a wide audience and inspire contemporary photographers and creatives around the world. The platinum palladium prints on display here are prized for their permanence and rich tonal spectrum. Employing metals more precious than gold, the platinum palladium process creates photographs with a lush, matt surface and their tones range from velvety blacks to a myriad of greys and delicate whites. This exhibition coincides with the publication of the new Thames & Hudson book “George Hoyningen-Huene: Photography, Fashion, Film,” further enhancing the celebration of his multifaceted contributions to the realms of photography, fashion and cinema.

About the photographer

Photographer George Hoyningen-Huene (1900-1968) epitomised the connections between art, fashion and cinema. Often known simply as Huene, he worked primarily in Paris, New York and Hollywood and first gained international fame in the fields of sophisticated fashion and portrait photography.

He was born in St Petersburg to a wealthy family but they had to flee their home during the Russian revolution in 1917. Huene spent time in England before moving to Paris, where he rapidly established himself as a visual innovator, fusing elements of modernism, neoclassicism and surrealism to create chic, arresting images. Huene’s carefully-lit studio compositions helped make him one of the leading photographers at Vogue and Vanity Fair magazines from 1926 to 1935, and later at the rival magazine Harper’s Bazaar. Revered by his contemporaries, he also inspired subsequent generations of photographers and filmmakers around the world.

SINGING IN THE DARK

7 Nov 2022 - 16 Apr 2023 | KC Eng and members of Red Photos

It is more than just about the opera, the performers and the props involved. It is the incorporeal embodiment of tradition that we must treasure today, fading as it will with time’s arrow. It is also an emblem of the altruistic spirit of dedicating oneself wholeheartedly to something without expecting much materially in return. This photo exhibition holds and passes on that shimmering trove to the audience, in hope that the persistence of its memory may yet still gleam farther down in the sands of time, before its final vanishment under a shroud of oblivion.

Shaz finds his Leica SL2 and the supporting lenses an ideal companion - with Leica’s raw files taking on his signature tones seamlessly. The result is an astounding collection that exudes both artistic brilliance and technical finesse.

About KC Eng

Many years ago – after my national service - I decided to see the world through the camera lens. This bridge between science and art, brings both worlds to a common denominator in my search fora unified vision in time, space and structure. For now, I write stories in visual language where prose and poetry require no transcription. My trusty Leica facilitates the 'taking', whilst I do the 'giving', to transform and transcend ordinary reality, bringing subjective order into objective chaos. In a domain undictated by formula, I turn to myself with my conscience speaking, writing and singing in the language of light and time.
