"I often see this old man riding around Chinatown and have shot him many times. What caught my eye as unusual this time was that he was pushing his bike. When I caught up with him, I could see that he had a puncture and slightly damaged wheel which he told me he was on his way home to mend. Apparently, it was a result of being clipped by a large truck, that didn’t see him (and didn’t stop)."

"For this shot, I decided to zoom in to fill the frame with the staircase. This was another moment where I chose my composition in advance, then waited to see who would enter the frame. I got a few interesting shots here but this was my favourite as there are multiple stories occurring (e.g. social distancing, young versus old etc). I don’t mind the tight crop on the people and in fact prefer it for the third person as it lends more of a sense of mystery to the scene."

"Another wide shot here to capture the whole scene, which is one that has become all too familiar lately. What I was specifically to capture here was the emptiness juxtapositioned with all the people. The slightly longer shutter speed blurring the movement of some of the people adds to a sense of busy energy."

"I once read a bumper sticker that said: "Movement Is The Language Of Personal Freedom”. This man and his shopping bags reminded me of that and gave me pause for a moment for reflection on his situation."

"I saw the man making his morning offering outside his retail store and quickly zoomed in to 70mm to get a shot as I walked closer. I’m glad that I did as this was the only shot I got of him with his hands stretched out before he finished up and went inside."

Mike Kane shares his thoughts, as a street photographer, on the Leica Vario-Elmarit SL 24-70mm F2.8 ASPH. "When I’m shooting street photography, I’ll usually use two bodies equipped with prime lenses - a Leica Q2 (28mm) and a Leica SL (usually equipped with a Noc 0.95 (50mm). I was therefore quite keen to try out the Leica Vario-Elmarit SL 24-70mm F2.8 ASPH on my SL which would give me a broader focal length range with a single camera and lens. I borrowed a unit from my local Leica store and took it for an early morning walk around the Chinatown area, planning two hours for a leisurely stroll and a target set of 10 images.
For this exercise, I set my ISO to 50, exposure compensation to -1 and I used Centrepoint spot focusing and light metering (first focusing on my subject then moving the camera to recompose for the shot). For the majority the shots, I used the auto-settings, apart from a couple where I wanted a more creative effect. Interestingly, of the 10 shots I selected, all were shot at the extremes of the focal length (24mm or 70mm) with none in-between, although this wasn’t a conscious thought at the time."
